How Commercial HVAC Repair Works

Here’s how A-1 handles an HVAC call, from the first phone call to heat or cooling coming back on.

Call or Request Online

Call 414-404-9739 or use the online request form. Let us know if you’ve lost heat, cooling or ventilation, what the thermostat shows and whether people are in the building. No heat during a subzero cold snap goes to the top of the list.

Rapid Dispatch

A technician based in the Milwaukee area is assigned to your call. In winter, rooftop work means snow and ice, so tell us how the roof is reached and whether the hatch and path to the unit are clear; it gets the repair started faster and safer.

Diagnose & Repair

The technician checks the whole system, not just the part that stopped: ignition and flame sensing, heat exchanger condition, refrigerant, belts and motors, and the electrical supply feeding the unit. Any refrigerant handling meets federal EPA 608 requirements, and parts come off the truck when stocked.

Test, Document, & Follow Up

Before leaving, the technician confirms heat or cooling is reaching the space, checks safety controls and documents the visit. A-1 guarantees the parts and labor for 90 days, so a repeat of the same failure in that window brings us back at no charge.

Highly Skilled Technicians

A-1’s HVAC technicians have more than 20 years of company experience behind them and train through Tech24 University, so they understand rooftop units and the commercial kitchens underneath them.

We Stock the Most Commonly Used Parts

Trucks are stocked for Wisconsin weather: igniters, flame sensors, inducer motors, pressure switches, capacitors, contactors, belts and filters, so more no heat and no cooling calls are fixed in a single trip.

90-Day Guarantee

A-1 guarantees parts and labor on every A-1 HVAC repair for 90 days. If the same failure returns in that time, the return visit costs you nothing.

Planned Maintenance Programs

A fall visit checks burners, heat exchangers, ignition and make up air heat before the first cold snap; a spring visit cleans coils, checks refrigerant and tests cooling before summer. Filters, belts and safety controls are covered on both.

All Fuel Types & Configurations

Natural gas, propane, electric and heat pump equipment, including rooftop package units, unit heaters, split systems and direct fired make up air, in restaurants, stores, schools, offices and warehouses.

Why do I smell exhaust or hear a CO alarm when the heat runs?

EMERGENCY: SHUT OFF THE UNIT

URGENCYLIKELY CAUSES

Critical

A cracked heat exchanger, or a flue or intake blocked by snow, ice or debris, can push combustion gases into the building. Carbon monoxide is odorless and deadly. Shut the unit off, get people out and fresh air in, call 911 if anyone feels ill, then call A-1.
Why does my HVAC unit keep tripping breakers or blowing fuses?
URGENCYLIKELY CAUSES

High

A failing compressor or motor drawing too much current, a shorted component, loose connections or an undersized circuit. Resetting it again and again risks burning out the compressor. Stop resetting and call; A-1 can repair the unit and the electrical supply together.
Why is my make up air unit blowing freezing air into the kitchen?
URGENCYLIKELY CAUSES

High

The make up air heater has lost its flame from an ignition fault, flame safeguard trip or gas valve problem, so it’s pulling in winter air at outdoor temperature. The kitchen gets dangerously cold, pilots blow out and pipes near the hood can freeze. Shut off the exhaust if you can and call.
Why is my rooftop unit blowing cold air on a winter morning?
URGENCYLIKELY CAUSES

High

The heating section isn’t lighting or staying lit, usually from an igniter that’s failed, a flame sensor coated with residue, a bad inducer motor or a pressure switch that won’t prove. The fan keeps running, so the unit blows outside temperature air into the building. In subzero weather, pipes can freeze within hours. Call right away.
Why is my air conditioning freezing up on hot days?
URGENCYLIKELY CAUSES

Medium

Low airflow from a dirty filter or coil, a slipping blower belt or a low refrigerant charge can drop the evaporator below freezing, so ice forms and cooling stops. Running it iced can damage the compressor. Turn the cooling off, run the fan to thaw it and call.
Why is ice building up around my rooftop unit?
URGENCYLIKELY CAUSES

Medium

Condensate lines freezing and backing up, drifted snow blocking intakes or melting snow refreezing around the unit. Ice can crack drain pans, block airflow and make the roof dangerous to work on. Keep a clear area around the unit and call if drains keep freezing.
Why does my heat keep shutting off and restarting?
URGENCYLIKELY CAUSES

Medium

Usually a high limit switch tripping because the unit is overheating from a dirty filter, a weak blower or a restricted return. Each trip leaves the space colder and stresses the heat exchanger. Change the filter, and if the cycling continues, call for service.
Why is it freezing near the doors when the rest of the building is warm?
URGENCYLIKELY CAUSES

Low

An economizer damper stuck open in winter, a failed entrance unit heater or doors that let in more cold air than the system can offset. Customers and staff near the entrance notice first. A damper and heater check usually fixes it.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

HVAC Repair FAQ

Answers to the questions we hear most about commercial HVAC and exhaust system repair. Don’t see yours? Give us a call.

Does A-1 service all HVAC brands?

Yes. A-1 services all major commercial HVAC brands, including rooftop package units, split systems, furnaces, unit heaters and make up air units, and it works on older and legacy equipment that other contractors may pass on.

Share the make, model and age of your equipment when you call. For older units, the technician will tell you honestly whether a repair still makes sense.

Is it smarter to repair an older rooftop unit or replace it?

Fix it when the unit is in good shape and the failure is a motor, capacitor, igniter or control. Replace it when an older unit loses its compressor or heat exchanger, breakdowns keep repeating, or it still uses R-22, a refrigerant US manufacturers stopped producing in 2020.

Replacement is a chance to cut energy use. Wisconsin businesses may qualify for Focus on Energy incentives on qualifying high efficiency HVAC, and an A-1 technician can quote both options on the same visit.

Who provides commercial HVAC services in Oak Creek and Milwaukee?

A-1 Services Group, based in Oak Creek, has provided commercial HVAC services and repair for more than 20 years across southeastern Wisconsin, including Milwaukee, Racine, Kenosha, Waukesha and Mequon.

A-1 services rooftop units, furnaces, unit heaters, split systems, make up air and kitchen exhaust for restaurants, stores, schools, offices and facilities, with 24/7 service for emergencies.

Can I have one company handle my HVAC and my kitchen equipment?

Yes. A-1 started in heating and air conditioning and now also repairs commercial cooking equipment, refrigeration and electrical systems, so one company and one number can cover the rooftop, the kitchen and the power between them.

That helps most when problems overlap: pilots that blow out because make up air heat failed, a walk in struggling because the kitchen runs hot, or a unit tripping because of a circuit issue.

What should a Wisconsin business do before heating season?

Schedule a heating check in September or October. A technician should inspect burners and heat exchangers, test ignition and flame safety controls, check make up air heat, replace filters and belts, and confirm flues and intakes are clear.

A cracked heat exchanger or failed make up air heater found in October is a planned repair. Found in a January cold snap, it can mean a closed business, frozen pipes or a carbon monoxide risk.
