How Commercial Refrigeration Repair Works

Here’s how A-1 handles a refrigeration call, from the first phone call to the box holding temperature again.

Call or Request Online

Call 414-404-9739 or send a request online with the unit type, the current reading on its thermometer and when you first noticed it. Product at risk? Say so right away; anything holding food above 41°F is dispatched as an emergency.

Rapid Dispatch

A technician based in the Milwaukee area is assigned to your call. In winter, rooftop condensing unit calls often mean snow covered roofs, so let us know how the roof is reached and whether the path to the unit is clear; it gets your repair started sooner.

Diagnose & Repair

The technician tracks the cause to its source, from fan motors, start components and refrigerant leaks to winter controls on a rooftop unit or an electrical fault feeding the system. Any refrigerant work is handled by technicians holding EPA Section 608 certification, using approved recovery equipment.

Test, Document, & Follow Up

Before sign off, the technician watches the box pull down to temperature and stay there through a full cycle, then documents the work. A-1 guarantees parts and labor for 90 days; a repeat of the same failure in that window brings us back at no charge.

Highly Skilled Technicians

A-1 refrigeration technicians train through Tech24 University, carry the federally required EPA 608 credential for handling refrigerant, and bring the HVAC background that refrigeration and rooftop systems share.

We Stock the Most Commonly Used Parts

Trucks are stocked with the cold side parts that wear out most, including condenser and evaporator fan motors, start relays, capacitors, thermostats, defrost timers and heaters, door gaskets and common refrigerants, so more boxes are back in range on the first visit.

90-Day Guarantee

A-1 guarantees parts and labor on every A-1 refrigeration repair for 90 days. If the same failure comes back in that time, the return visit costs you nothing.

Planned Maintenance Programs

A fall visit checks winter controls, crankcase heaters and door heaters before the first cold snap; a spring visit cleans condenser coils and checks charge before summer humidity arrives. Both include gasket, defrost and temperature checks.

Why is my freezer running nonstop without getting cold?
URGENCYLIKELY CAUSES

High

An iced over evaporator from a failed defrost heater or timer, a refrigerant leak or a failing expansion valve. The unit runs harder and longer while product slowly warms. Check for heavy frost on the coil and call before frozen product starts to thaw.
Why does my refrigeration unit hum but won't start, or trip the breaker?
URGENCYLIKELY CAUSES

High

A failing start capacitor or relay, a compressor drawing too much current, low voltage or a weak circuit. Every failed start heats the compressor, which is the costliest component to replace. Shut it down and call; A-1 can check the unit and the electrical supply together.
Why does my rooftop condensing unit struggle when it's below zero?
URGENCYLIKELY CAUSES

High

Condensers need head pressure control and crankcase heat to run in extreme cold. A failed fan cycling control, flooding valve or crankcase heater can keep the system from starting or cause it to short cycle and starve the evaporator. The box warms up on the coldest days. Call before product temperatures climb.
Why are my dairy and cheese cases warming up?
URGENCYLIKELY CAUSES

Medium

Product stocked above the load line, a blocked air curtain, dirty coils or a failed fan motor. Open dairy and cheese cases rely on a steady curtain of cold air, and anything that disrupts it warms the front of the case first. Restock below the load line and call if temperatures keep drifting.
Why is my ice machine leaking or freezing up?
URGENCYLIKELY CAUSES

Medium

Low water pressure, a failed water inlet valve, a harvest control problem or a machine installed where the room gets too cold in winter. Most ice machines need the surrounding air to stay above a minimum temperature. Move it or heat the space, and call if it keeps freezing.
Why is water pooling under my walk in freezer or reach in?
URGENCYLIKELY CAUSES

Medium

A clogged condensate drain, or in freezers, a failed drain line heater that lets the drain freeze shut, so water backs up and spills. Standing water is a slip hazard and can damage floors and equipment bases. Call to clear the drain and check the heater.
Why isn't my back bar cooler keeping drinks cold on busy nights?
URGENCYLIKELY CAUSES

Medium

Constant door openings, a condenser choked by heat and dust under the bar, or a weak evaporator fan. Warm bottles mean unhappy customers and lost sales on the busiest nights. Keep the grille under the cooler clear and have the condenser cleaned regularly.
Why does my walk in cooler run warm on humid summer days?
URGENCYLIKELY CAUSES

Medium

Dirty condenser coils, a low refrigerant charge or worn door gaskets can’t handle the extra moisture and heat of a humid Wisconsin summer. Warm, wet air entering the box loads the coil until it can’t keep up. Clean the coils, check the gaskets and call if the temperature stays over 41°F.

A few degrees too warm can cost a cooler full of product or a failed inspection. Get an A-1 refrigeration technician on site today.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Commercial Refrigeration Repair FAQ

Answers to the questions we hear most from restaurant, c-store, and grocery operators. Don’t see yours? Give us a call.

Who handles commercial refrigeration repair in Oak Creek and Milwaukee?

A-1 Services Group, based in Oak Creek, provides commercial refrigeration repair across southeastern Wisconsin, including Milwaukee, Racine, Kenosha and Waukesha. That includes walk in cooler repair, reach ins, ice machines, display cases and rooftop condensing units.

We work with restaurants, taverns, supper clubs, grocery stores, schools and facilities, with 24/7 service for emergencies.

Which refrigeration brands can A-1 service?

A-1 services all major commercial refrigeration brands, self contained and remote, from walk in systems and reach ins to display cases and ice machines. Share the make and model when you call so the technician can bring the right parts.

Older systems are welcome too, including walk ins and remote condensing units that have been on the roof for many years. Your technician will tell you when a repair still makes sense.

How cold should a walk in cooler and freezer be kept?

At or below 41°F for coolers; Wisconsin’s food code follows the FDA Food Code for cold holding, and many kitchens set coolers a few degrees colder for a margin. Freezers are generally kept at 0°F or colder.

Log readings at least twice a day. If a cooler climbs past the limit and hasn’t come back down an hour after the door was closed, check product temperatures and call for service.

Should I repair or replace an older walk in system?

Fix it when the box is in good shape and the failure is a fan, relay, control or leak. Replace it when an aging compressor gives out, leaks keep coming back, or the system uses R-22, a refrigerant no longer made in the United States that costs more to recharge every year.

If you replace, Wisconsin businesses may qualify for Focus on Energy incentives on qualifying efficient refrigeration. Your A-1 technician can price the repair and the replacement side by side.

Can A-1 fix the electrical side of a refrigeration problem?

Yes. A-1 provides electrical service alongside refrigeration repair, so a compressor that won’t start because of low voltage, a failing disconnect or an overloaded circuit doesn’t need a second contractor.

That matters when a new walk in or ice machine is added, when a unit keeps tripping a breaker, or when it’s unclear whether the fault is in the equipment or the building’s power.
